Sudbury Camino 2020 Rules and Frequently Asked Questions

Trail Safety and covid-19

Rainbow Routes Association values the safety of our community and wants to ensure that all trail users are diligent in following safety guidelines put in place by Public Health to keep us all safe. All trail users have a responsibility to be considerate and respectful especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. The following tips are provided to help ensure that all users have an enjoyable and safe experience:

  • Practice physical distancing as much as possible.
  • Be respectful of people’s space — Maintain physical distancing by staying two metres (six feet) apart from anyone who is not a member of your 10 person social circle or bubble. This includes avoiding group rides or hikes, and avoiding congregating at trail junction points.
  • If you are unable to stay more than 2 metres apart, please where a cloth mask.
  • Keep to the right and walk single file - When on the trail, allow other users enough space to maintain two metres of physical distance. Keep to the right and walk single file if passing others
  • Be aware of others -Travel at a safe speed and anticipate others around corners and blind spots. Let others know you are coming by giving a friendly greeting or ringing a bell. Both are considerate, work well, and don’t startle others.
  • Wash your hands and bring hand sanitizer.
  • If you are sick, stay home.
  • Monitor yourself for symptoms of COVID-19 and consider doing a self-assessment.
  • Testing is available, by appointment, for anyone with a symptom or people who are asymptomatic and who are concerned that they have been exposed to COVID-19.
  • Follow public health advice.
  • When in doubt, be respectful, courteous, and kind – we are all in this together.

what should I expect when completing the traditional sudbury camino route?

Section 1: moderate | Start at Kinsmen Sports Complex (Hillfield Trail - Lively) | 30km

Complete the full 30 km on-foot journey, and embrace the dynamic scenery as you travel along several official RRA trails and a series of urban routes. Walking the full Sudbury Camino is not difficult – most (but not all) of the stages are fairly flat and on good paths. The main difficulty is that few of us have walked continuously for more than 5 hours. Get ready to test your endurance, expand your senses, and be prepared to learn more about your feet than you ever thought possible!

Section 2: easy | Start at Robinson Playground | 21km

Complete the 21 km challenge from Robinson Park to Moonlight Beach, and embrace the experience of navigating 5 official RRA Trails, and a series of unique urban routes. On this route, you will be walking from the city's South End to Moonlight Beach!

Section 3: easy | Start at the Downtown Farmer’s Market | 14km

Complete the 14 km challenge by kicking off your adventure at the downtown Farmer's Market. You will continue your on foot journey towards Moonlight Beach enjoying the views found along four of the official RRA trails, including the scenic Bell Park Pathway and the Lake Laurentian Conservation area.

Section 4: easy | Start at Bioski | 4km

Get the family outdoors and exploring this summer! Kids naturally want to explore their surroundings, and you can encourage this by signing up for the 4 km family challenge along the beautiful Lake Laurentian to Moonlight Beach trail.

Warning: for best results, let the kids take lead and set the pace to experience the outdoors in a way that you've likely forgotten. Be prepared for a wild expedition in search of insects, flowers, and wildlife, and cool off with a swim at the finish line.

What should I bring on my long distance hike?

If you are completing a long distance Camino journey, we recommend you bring the following items:

  • 2 refillable water bottles
  • Food for the day
  • Protection from sun and bugs
  • Adequate footwear (closed toed, water resistant if possible)
  • Appropriate clothing (hat, layers, long pants)
  • First aid kit
  • Medication (as required)

What are my options for commuting to my hiking start point?

Public Transportation: Many of our local trailheads are accessible by public transportation. Plan your walking route and review the City of Greater Sudbury transit schedule and routes here.

Driving your vehicle and parking: Many of our local trailheads are located in areas where public parking is available. However, if public parking is not available please do not park in residential or business lots without permission.
