The Project:

The Sustainable Mobility Plan for Greater Sudbury 2010 recognized that making cycling safe, accessible and pleasant would encourage more people to use bicycles as a means of transportation and recreation.

Safe cycling and accessibility to bicycles is a "chicken or egg" scenario, you cannot have success with one without the other. Thus our project will work in conjunction with many community groups over two years to address both issues simultaneously.

Goal:

The goal of this project is to establish the conditions necessary to make cycling safe for and accessible to Greater Sudburians of all ages, abilities and incomes thus creating a more active and healthy community with fewer cycling injuries. Ultimately, we want to have more people cycling safely in Sudbury and thus realizing injury free health, economic and environmental benefits.

Primary Objectives:

1 – Bike Education Program: To develop and implement a self-sustaining CAN-BIKE instruction program to provide education regarding safe cycling. This can reduce cycling injuries. Click here for details on CAN-BIKE 2 training.

2 – Bike Exchange Program: To develop and implement a Bike Exchange program modeled on the successful SDHU skate exchange program that will be delivered to and by the residents of Greater Sudbury with a focus on the community living on a low income. For details on Bike Exchange events, click here.

The interwoven programs will be delivered through events in locations accessible to all with special attention to  families living on a low income.

The execution of this project has been made possible through funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion and partnerships with the Social Planning Council of Sudbury and the Sudbury & District Health Unit.
